Sidewalk Conversations

FADE IN:

EXT. NIGHT

You sit on the edge of the sidewalk in front of your friend’s house. The street is empty. You take out a cigarette and light it up. The gate opens and out came PERSON. Person sits beside you as you take the first hit.

PERSON
Hey.

YOU
Hey.

Both of you sit in silence for about a minute. The silence was comfortable, yet it seemed to drag on forever. Person looks up and examines the sky and takes a deep breath. Meanwhile, you draw another hit.

PERSON
I heard you talking to your friend earlier. Over the phone.

You let out a small nervous laugh.

YOU
Fuck. .. Look, that was nothing. Whatever you heard.

PERSON
Were you talking about me?

YOU
What d’you think?

Silence.

PERSON
(whispers) It wasn’t just in your head.

The corner of your lips rises up a bit in amusement.

PERSON
Whatever we had… or have. You didn’t imagine it. It happened.

You stare in to something far, far away. You take another hit from the cigarette.

PERSON
It happened, okay?

Person’s head turns to look at you. You try hard not to turn your head and meet person’s eyes. Silence.

You turn and look for the first time. For a split second, it feels like you are the only people left in the world. Everything was perfect.

You let out a sigh and raised your eyebrows.

YOU
Look. You’re happy, right? With her?

Pause.

PERSON
Yeah. I am.

Pause.

YOU
Good. Me too.

FADE OUT.
